Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to
Rainbow Bridge
.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross
Rainbow Bridge together....

Alex, your contribution to avian research is immeasurable. You were the reason I wanted a parrot. I hope that your next journey offers the same amount of excitement.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Alex taught us all so much. He confirmed that animals are more complex than we ever imagined. He gave a voice to the thoughts that I suspect many of our animal companions think. Thank you, Alex, for your ability to illuminate the world with your knowledge. You will be missed.

God Bless your beautiful beautiful boy Alex. I know how smart birds are. I used to have a sulphur crested cockatoo (we are in Sydney, Australia) and every day I would let her out and she would fly up the street racing my car on my way to work each morning and she would wait for us every Saturday at McDonald's after soccer to the amazement of everyone in the drive thru. SHe knew when she was naughty and she called me Mummy and gave me kisses. One day she didnt come home and showed up many months later with her Husband, stayed the day and flew off never to be seen again. Your wonderful boy helped prove how smart birds really are and that they can show emotion. God Bless Alex and the work you did together. May my cat Bandit (Bam Bam) who died on 1st Feb 09 protect him in Rainbow Bridge. Bam Bam was a gentle soul and loved birds - he would sit for hours on the grass and watch them fascinated. God Bless you both, Jen X

I only just started reading your book "Alex & Me" and I barely made it past the first 10 pages before crying. I am such a bird lover and my family, we have a Senegal(African parrot) back at home plus a few other birds. One of our birds recently flew away because the door was open and she got out and I'm still really sad about that. As for our senegal, I miss him because I am away right now in college and I know he misses me too because I am the only one in my family that can get him to lay on his back for a while and tickle him. I know how special Alex was and the difference he made too so I pray he is resting peacefully and God Bless his big heart!
